Our Curatorial Lens

METHODOLOGY // STOCKHOLM ARCHIVE

Jumbinordicgadgt (published by Jumbinordicgadgt Curatorial AB in Stockholm) is an independent technical atlas dedicated to Scandinavian industrial design and functional domestic objects. We do not operate as a retail storefront, nor do we write lifestyle puffery about prestige collectibles.

Our editorial premise is straightforward: in the Nordic functionalist lineage—shaped by Gregor Paulsson’s 1919 manifesto Vackrare vardagsvara (More Beautiful Everyday Goods), Kaare Klint’s anthropometric research in Copenhagen, and Alvar and Aino Aalto’s experiments in bent birch and pressed glass—beauty is never an applied coating. Beauty is the visible result of an object solving a domestic problem cleanly.

The Four-Point Object Audit

Before any chair, lamp, shelving system, or tabletop vessel enters our documentation plates, we evaluate it against four physical benchmarks:

  • Structural Transparency: Can you see how the object holds itself together? Whether it is an exposed birch wedge in a through-tenon, a countersunk machine screw in flat spring steel, or a folded pleat locking onto a wire ring, the joint must do real mechanical work.
  • Sensory Calm: Does the object eliminate glare, clatter, and thermal shock? Lighting must shield the naked bulb from direct view; work surfaces must feel warm under the forearm and dampen the sound of ceramic cups.
  • Footprint Economy: How does the object behave when not in active use? Stools that stack in a 450 mm corner, bowls that nest without jamming, and wall-hung shelves that leave the floorboards open earn their square centimetres in compact apartments.
  • Non-Toxic Repairability: Can a homeowner maintain and repair the surface at year twenty using soap flakes, linseed oil, fine sandpaper, or replacement cord rather than sending the piece to landfill?

Why Flat Vector Elevations?

Lifestyle photography often hides mediocre joinery behind soft-focus styling and afternoon sunbeams. Throughout this site, we illustrate objects using flat vector elevations, cross-sections, and exploded joint diagrams in a controlled palette of obsidian black, crimson, and silver. Stripping away background clutter lets you read backrest rake angles, shade cutoff spirals, and shelf bracket clearances directly.
